A tooth may need to be removed for a number of reasons. These reasons can include severe decay, infection, or an impacted or infected wisdom tooth. Other reasons may include the need to prepare your mouth for a corrective or cosmetic procedure like dentures or tooth implants. Tooth removal or extraction may also be necessary due to trauma or injury.
Wisdom teeth are commonly extracted as they can become very problematic, usually in your twenties. They are the last molars to emerge, and sometimes they remain below the gumline or grow horizontally. This can cause serious issues when they fail to erupt properly, particularly when they grow against other teeth. Pushing against the adjacent teeth can cause damage to the tooth resulting in the loss of additional teeth. Many people have a very difficult time cleaning around a wisdom tooth due to the location in the mouth, which can lead to decay and periodontal disease. While some people do not need to have the wisdom teeth removed, the majority of people are better off without them.
