TMJ (TMD) Therapy

Temporomandibular Joint pain or Temporomandibular Dysfunction, better known as TMJ or TMD, can make life difficult for many people. The Temporomandibular Joint connects your upper and lower jaw. It helps you chew, speak and even breathe. While its dysfunction is not completely understood by the medical community, it is largely associated with problems like bruxism, night grinding and general stress. Common symptoms include:

  •  Pain in your neck and shoulders

  •  Ringing or pain in your ears

  •  Hearing loss

  •  Teeth clenching or grinding while you sleep

  •  Feeling constantly tired

  •  Frequent headaches

Because symptoms can vary for each person, treatment can be tricky. The best way to successfully treat TMJ is with a proper diagnosis. Only by locating the source of the distress can we stop it. Easing the pain and tension of TMD can often be accomplished with dental devices like mouthguards and splints, as well as strategies to relax the muscles in your jaw. Taking careful consideration of your case, we will help you craft a treatment plan to safely decrease the tension in your jaw, shoulders, ear and head. We can also help you navigate some of the medical solutions available for TMD symptoms.

Treatment can sometimes include a referral to other specialists, such as massage therapists, chiropractors, and physiotherapists. Our team will work with you to ensure you receive the appropriate treatment to stop your pain and halt the negative effects of TMD. As with most dental complications, early and thorough treatment is better, ensuring there is no complication later on or need for advanced treatment. With proper treatment and our help, you can avoid wear on your teeth, stress in your jaw and the above symptoms.
